Paysandú, Uruguay · former Mausoleum of Leandro Gómez
In the heart of Paysandú, on Plaza Constitución and facing the Basilica, stands a monument that for decades was only viewed from the outside. It was erected in honor of General Leandro Gómez, the central figure in one of the most intense episodes in Uruguayan history: the Defense of Paysandú. Between late 1864 and early 1865, the city endured a military siege that culminated in a 56-hour battle. Gómez and the surviving officers were executed by firing squad on January 2, 1865. Ever since, Paysandú has borne the name it earned right there in the square: La Heroica. The former mausoleum has been transformed into an interpretation center. The monument evolved from a place of tribute into a space for understanding. Inside, visitors step into an immersive experience blending history and technology, retracing what unfolded on these very streets more than 150 years ago: the siege, the resistance, and the climax of the Defense. It is a space open to the community, accessible to everyone, and designed with school groups and guided tours in mind. It is the memory of a city, told on the exact spot where it happened.
